LSG Traveling Scarves

This February is the one year anniversary of Lazy, Stupid and Godless group on ravelry.com. Don't let the group name fool you! Sure, some of us are lazy (I'd include myself in that category ;) and there might be a few who are stupid (not likely) and of course there are some who are Godless (not me). Why the odd name? Because we are also a group of ravelry members who love to be grownups. We cuss, and tease each other with epitaphs like 'twatweasle', support each other when we need a shoulder to lean on or an ear to bitch in.

To celebrate the one year of awesomeness that is lsg, some of us have decided to make traveling scarves. How it works, is that each person starts a scarf then mails it on to the next person, until each person in the group has knitted a 5 inch section (each group has less than 10 members- I think) and it gets back to whomever started the scarf. So not only will I have a finished scarf (actually two, I am knitting on a handspun group and a 'normal/scents ok' group) but it will have been knitted on by a bunch of awesome people :0 I'll have two completely original scarves to keep me warm next fall and winter ..

A simple Scarf

Ruffle Scarf

Scarf is worked Length wise. You can substitute any bulky yarn, or knit with two strands of worsted at the same time. You want your stitches to be more loose than normal, to give your scarf a nice drape! If you are normally a tight knitter, go up a size, and if you are a loose kitter, you should be ok.

Skills needed: Knit, Purl, Yarn-overs (yo), casting on and binding off

materials:
Lion Brand Homespun Yarn (or other bulky weight yearn)
10.5 (6.5 mm) circular needle, 40 in (100 cm)




Directions:

Adult Size
Cast on 131 using Long Tail method.
Row 1- Purl
Row 2- Knit
Row 3- Purl
Row 4- Knit 1, *(yo, Knit 1)*
Row 5- Purl
Row 6- Knit
Row 7- Purl
Row 8- Knit 1, *(yo, Knit 1)*
Row 9- Purl
Row 10- Knit
Row 11- Purl
Row 12- Bind off loosely


Child Size
Cast on 101 using Long Tail method.

RE:" What to Knit?"

So.. I think I am going to pick up Fitted Knits. There is a cute little shrug (the Two Tone Shrug- contrasting cuff and neckline ribbing) that might fit the bill. I just hope I have enough! And maybe if I knit fast enough (LOL) I can wear it to the family Thanksgiving.

If not, then I like the idea of mittens and a scarf. A 'My So Called Scarf' would be nice in the Peach Tree, then mittens in the Red Java with Peach Tree on the cuffs :) I think I'd make the mittens first, and maybe do the first bit of the scarf with the red java to have it as edging on both ends. My mind is racing! I love the planning stages of knitting! :D

knitting update

wow! it's been a month since my last post, so i thought i would break this up into a knitting post and an 'other' post.

recently finished projects include a lacy scarf for baby sister. I used the Nashua Handknits Creative Focus Brushed Alpaca in Rose that i received in a KH swap. Lovely, charming, warm, soft, divine stuff! i would live to knit a whole sweater in this stuff! Seriously!

I cast on 220, knit 4 rows. then knit2, *[yo, k1, k2tog]* to end or so. knit 4 rows, then repeat. I also added fringe with stone beads for added glamor. sis loves it and it knit up super quick! I have learned the need for blocking wires though, so when i finally finish a stole, i'll be making a trip to Home Depot to get some steel wires to use. it's got to be easier than using quilting pins.



I've also knitted my BIL a balaclava (no real pattern) using 2 balls of cascade 220 superwash wool. one in black and one in grey. He loves it and really needed it for work. he works at a paper mill and occasionally gets burns from the large, HOT drums that presses the paper (now he can keep his face pretty lol)


also, i have cast on and have in progress "bee stripe" (lorna's laces shepherd sock) socks for mom and some donegal tweed bare (from knitpicks.com) that i dyed in "I like Lello" for my niece. No progress pictures today. I'll try to add some tomorrow. Both are simple stockinette because i wanted the yarns to shine, and not be too fussy. I love how they both are turning out.

I have taught myself to crochet! Yay me! I am crocheting a giant granny square out of some lovely Plymouth Bella Colour (i think it's been discontinued...) yarn as a present or my DH's coworker (they had a baby boy). I wanted to learn primarily to crochet wool soakers for our dd, since it'll be thicker and more absorbent with out having to knit then felt one to get a similar results. I used the tutorial from crochet cabana.
She has great pictures and teaches you to learn how to understand a pattern as well.

I knit dad a pair of fiber trends clogs as part of his Christmas gift (it also included a robe, pajama pants and dark chocolate!) They are a hit, and now mom wants a pair... I used Patons classic wool merino for them.





I too had a great knitting related Christmas! Dad got me a nifty swift (the table top one) it's so much nicer than the one i made this summer, and much easier to use. DH got me a set of Denise interchangeable. I really wanted the KnitPicks Options set, but i do like the Denise set 200% better than the Boye Needlemaster i bought off of ebay.I might get the Options as a birthday present, along with some of the new longer length traditional circs for magic loop sock knitting.

my silk scarf

i bought two hanks of Mystical Creation Yarns (MYC) wool silk, one in 'zodiac' and the other in 'sequin'. It's thick and thin, and varies from (guessing here) a dk weight to a heavy worsted/bulky weight. I was a little surprised, because i wasn't aware of that, but I like it still. I do wish I had order two more dis-similar colorways (they are very similar- the effect I was trying to get is diminished by their similarities). I am knitting them into a scarf, inspired by all the chevron scarves I have seen on flickr. Since i don't own the "Last Minute Knitted Gifts" book, i have to wing it.
I used the jaywalker sock pattern as a guide and went from there. here is the pattern i am using.
use two color ways, A and B
on size 10 aluminum straights
easy definitions- K f/b: knit a stitch, keep loop on left needle, insert right needle in the back and knit again (increasing a stitch)
DD- slip one stitch purl wise, knit two together knit wise (K2TOG), pass the slipped stitch over the K2TOG.

cast on 26 stitches with A
Knit two rows in A
drop yarn
Knit two rows in B
drop yarn (every two rows you will switch color. the yarns will be carried up the edge. trust me, it won't be noticeable)
with yarn A
Row 1: K f/b, K 4, DD, K 4, K f/b, K f/b, K 4, DD, K 4, K f/b
Row 2: P 26
drop yarn
with yarn B
Row 3: K f/b, K 4, DD, K 4, K f/b, K f/b, K 4, DD, K 4, K f/b
Row 4: P 26

repeat rows 1-4, making sure to alternate yarns, until scarf is to length you like. end with 4 rows in garter (knit every row) then bind off.
